Air France: all speed sensors replaced on A330-A340 by the end of June

“ANOMALIES ANEMOMETER”

A note sent to pilots of A330-340 Air France dated 6 November 2008 stated that “a significant number of incidents” related to “anemometric anomalies”, i.e. Pitot probes that allow to control the speed of the aircraft, “occurred in cruises on our A330-340”.

These incidents have resulted in six reports of security, according to the note. It describes the “anomalies” observed indications wrong speed, different speeds shown on the screens of the captain and those of the co-pilot, the autopilot disconnection, early announcement of the aircraft, etc.

The Office of Investigations and Analysis (BEA), in charge of security on the flight AF447, noted “a discrepancy of velocities measured by these probes, without being able to explain or link it to failure systems also detected.

The next day, Air France announced in a press release observed from May 2008 “incidents of information loss in flight anemometric cruise on A340 and A330.

These incidents prompted the company to accelerate its replacement program Pitot from 27 in April, “without prejudice of a connection with the accident flight AF447.

The probe, whose dysfunction is proved by the report Acars (messages automatically sent by the aircraft maintenance for Air France at Roissy), may have a role in the sequence of events that caused the loss of plane.

INCIDENTS SINCE 1996

Air France has acknowledged in a statement that, since May 2008, “incidents of loss of information airspeed in cruise flight on A340 and A330 were found. In an internal memorandum in November 2008 that Le Monde had consulted, the company reported a “significant number of incidents reported by ASR (Air Safety Report) associated with Pitot probes led to loss indications anemometric. Asked about the progress of the procedure for the replacement of pitot (three per aircraft), Air France said Monday evening that it was operating fifteen A330s and ten A340-nine. Of this fleet, all aircraft have at least one pitot latest-generation aircraft and nine have at least two or three. ”

The incidents are not new: the site, EuroCockpit specialist has identified a large number, including a date of 1996. The site adds that in 2008, late August, and early September, two A330 Air Caribbean have probably experienced the same scenario that the flight AF447 meeting “of severe icing conditions.”

These problems have led to a meeting with technicians from Airbus in October 2008. Without waiting for the meeting, said that Air Caraïbes probes “Pitot” had been changed over the fleet in September 2008.

Fifteen aircraft (12 Brazilian and 3 French) are involved in search, as well as six ships including a frigate of the French Navy, the Ventose.

The [search] should be strengthened with the arrival announced, Wednesday 10 June, the submarine nuclear attack French Emerald. With its ultra sonar, it should facilitate the location of the two black boxes.

As to why not, the ship of Ifremer (French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea) on board which is the submarine Nautilus, his arrival is scheduled for Thursday evening or Friday morning.
